Interesting Building Projects Happening in Los Angeles Right Now

There’s never a dull moment if you live in Los Angeles or work in the AEC industry within the city. The recession led to looser lending standards, which prompted developers in L.A. to propose more projects, especially in the downtown area. The city has also entered a phase of dense urban living, and now the construction industry must hustle to keep up with growing demands.

Here we highlight a few of the interesting construction projects going on in Los Angeles right now.

Affordable Housing Complex on Hollywood Boulevard
As with many parts of California right now, affordable housing is a top concern. To help meet that need, Meta Housing Corporation has been working on a new five-story building with 40 subdivided apartments and retail space. The corporation partnered with WSH Management and Y & M Architects to build out one-, two-, and three-bedroom apartments, as well as a rooftop deck and children’s play space.

Pershing Square Mixed Use Tower
Another development worth mentioning in Los Angeles is the Pershing Square Mixed Use Tower. The project is for a new hotel, condominium and apartment towers, including over 10,000 residential units. Developer Jeffrey Fish is aiming to revitalize the historic neighborhood, and one proposed highlight is a suspended swimming pool. However, this project is still contingent upon securing a public-private partnership and has an optimistic completion date of 2019.

High-Rise Offices at Times Mirror Square
Another property steeped in history that’s due for demolition and rehabilitation is the Times Mirror Square complex in downtown L.A. The Vancouver-based Onni Group purchased the property for $120 million and wants to rehab the old Los Angeles Times headquarters to become modern office space. If all goes as planned, this will cause one office building and a parking garage to be demolished and two new high-rises to be built in their place. Onni’s plans include 1,127 residential units and at least 34,000-square-feet of commercial space on the ground floor.

L.A. Rams Stadium
Construction recently broke ground in nearby Inglewood, California for the new Los Angeles Rams stadium. This is a $2.66 billion football stadium designed by HKS Architects and will enable the team to move from St. Louis to Los Angeles. One interesting feature of the stadium is a triangular roof made of ETFE that will span across an outdoor lobby and create a spectator gathering spot. Due for completion by the 2019-2020 football season, the stadium will seat 80,000 fans for games and up to 100,000 for concerts and other events. It is set to be the world’s most expensive stadium complex. To provide easy access, the Los Angeles County MTA has discussed the idea of extending the light rail system to the stadium.
