MythBusters wanted to know whether the traditional American four-way stop was better than the UK roundabout when it comes down to effectiveness of  flow of traffic during a 15-minute test. The answer will surprise those you haven’t driven in both types of intersections. But there’s more to roundabouts than efficiently getting more vehicles through in less time.

Every year more U.S. cities are being convinced of the roundabout’s positive impact, planting them in strategic locations and tracking the effect they have economically, environmentally, and on public safety. Not only do roundabouts reduce fatalities by 90%, they’re environmentally friendly and easy on the pocketbook. Less electricity is used for controlling intersections, vehicles pass through wasting less gas because they’re not stopping then starting again, equating to and overall reduction in emissions that contaminate the air.
